Unless you were hiding under a rock the past few weeks, you know that "The Man" was back in town - comedian Sean Morey - for a two-night stand at Burgi's Roundhouse in Greenwood March 10 and 11.
I got to take in the Saturday end of the weekend. Sean was in good form, heaping abundant abuse on Bulls Creek, telling lots of age-related jokes, doing battle with one wayward heckler, and singing lots of his funny songs, such as "Ghost Chickens in theSky," "Hairy Ass," "The Man Who Doesn't Exist," "He Said She Heard," "Dear Santa," "Little Altar Boy," "Bottom of a Woman's Purse," and of course, the finale, "The Man Song."
Regarding the heckler, two thoughts...Why do some idiots in this world think that just because they pay a cover or admission charge, that they suddenly have the right to interrupt a performance and try to upstage the talent onstage? Memo to hecklers: Nobody thinks you are funnier than the comedian onstage, and nobody wants to hear your crap! Save it for the baseball, football or hockey game, or use it on your spouse after the show! Respect the wishes of the other 99.9% of the folks who spent their hard-earned moolah, and if you don't like the performance, politely get up and leave! And if your idea of a good time is harassing the performer on stage, do us all a big favor and STAY THE HELL HOME!!! The other thought regarding the heckler...When Sean Morey called for the removal of the heckler, I think part of the problem with Burgi's bouncer staff not responding is the dilemma that I imagine many comedians probably face - who knows whether you're serious or joking? When Sean Morey asked for the bouncers to remove the heckler, I think they - and a number of folks in the audience - thought Sean was joking, and just raining more abuse on his heckler!
I was one of a number of folks who stuck around after Sean's performance for the musical entertainment of the evening, Jill West and Blues Attack from Pittsburgh. Jill West and Blues Attack were the third-place finishers in last year's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis. Group namesake Jill West is considered one of the best female blues singers in Pittsburgh if not the entire country, and she and her band brought it! Jill West and Blues Attack played a mixture of blues, soul and rock'n'roll, including original songs and remakes of classics. Some of the songs they performed included their own renditions of Elvis' "Hound Dog," Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby," Eddie Floyd/Steve Cropper's "Knock On Wood," Ray Charles' "Unchain My Heart," Stevie Ray Vaughan's "The House Is a Rockin,'" Etta James' "d**n Your Eyes" and more; also original tunes such as "Watchin' 'N' Waitin,'" "Four Letter Word," "Bye Bye Baby," and "Don't Worry 'Bout the Weather." This band was tight and in the pocket, and both of their guitarists - Mark Cholewski and Gregg Krupa - brought their 'A' game. Jill West sang with a full, powerful, soulful voice and robust delivery - it didn't take long for the power of her presentation to get your foot tapping or your head nodding in unison with the beat. Excellent stuff! And if you didn't stick around for Jill West, it's looking good that she and her band will return to Burgi's sometime soon.
Lastly, thanks to everyone who came out to Burgi's both nights to see Sean Morey - your support ensures that Q94 will be bringing more quality comedy to the area in the near future! And on my own personal note, thanks again to the wild and crazy Gallitzin crew I spent part of the evening with - Pete and his wife, the "two coolest grannies in the world," Darlene and Cris, and Crissy and Heather. Thanks for the hospitality and for the laughs!
