Thursday, my next-to-last day in Florida, was a good time. During the day we attended a flea market. Thursday night, we took in the Tampa Bay Lightning/Carolina Hurricanes NHL hockey game. The home team, Tampa Bay, won 5-3. And I dodged a bullet, as I wore a Hurricanes T-shirt to the game...not the Carolina Hurricanes, but a Felix & the Hurricanes shirt! (It was blue, not the red, black and white colors that Carolina uses.)
After the game, we headed to Carlie's Lounge in Pinellas Park, south of Tampa, to catch up with a former area musician and Altoona radio guy. If you remember the glory days of Altoona AM rock radio in the early to mid 80's, you might remember hearing Dan Grabill doing overnights on WFBG. Back in the mid-80's, Dan moved to Florida, and settled in the Tampa area. He fronted a few bands, and for the past 14 years has been the singer for a Tampa-based band called Diamond Gray (www.diamondgray.com). Dan's stage name is Danny Gray, and his longtime partner in the band is guitarist Rocky Diamond - thus the name Diamond Gray. Diamond Gray has two CD's out; and performs a blend of classic and Southern rock. It was a fun moment during the group's show at Carlie's, when Dan - who I used to work with at WFBG in the 80's - realized that his former co-worker was sitting in the audience. We chatted and reminisced old times, and his band kicked serious ass! There's a possibility that Diamond Gray might be headed up to our area to perform at a biker event later this year. If they do come up, check them out, they're very good!
Alas, tomorrow (Friday) we begin our trek back home. And the weather forecast for Saturday has a possible nor'easter bringing snow to the northeast, including several inches of white stuff in Altoona - my welcome home gift. d**n!
