On April 8, I participated in a litter/dump site clean-up event sponsored by the Blair County Chapter of PA Cleanways and the Little Juniata River Association. The clean-up took place along a 4-mile stretch of the Little Juniata River near Union Furnace and Spruce Creek. These clean-ups are always rewarding; I get a feeling of satisfaction from arriving at a trashed-out section of river or trail and helping to clean it up, and restore it to its natural beauty. And especially with river clean-ups such as this one, I often get to see wildlife and spring flora and fauna as I'm picking up trash. Another interesting sidelight of these clean-ups is discovering "treasures" that people throw out. It proves the old adage of "one man's junk is another man's treasure." In this past Saturday's clean-up, I was working alongside a group of teenagers, and some of the stuff these kids found was fascinating. One girl found a slightly rusty pogo stick that still worked! Another youth found a bicycle in working shape. And in the picture below, another member of the clean-up crew found none other than Elvis, with guitar in hand! At last word, Elvis is being cleaned up, and will find new life on a mantle display somewhere in the Spruce Creek area. The King lives...
