This past Tuesday, Dec. 12, a loyal Q94 listener and friend of the area music scene passed away. Steve Lockard suffered a heart attack at his home in Altoona; he had just celebrated his 63rd birthday on Dec. 4.
Over the years, I came to know Steve and his daughter, Kim, out on the area music scene. Steve was a big blues fan, and frequently attended shows by Felix & the Hurricanes, Half Tempted, Fat Vinny & the Wiseguys and other area classic rock bands. He and Kim used to attend Q94's "Q-Fest" concerts each year, and used to share snacks and assist me with my camcorder when I recorded "Q-Fest" and the annual "End Of Summer Jam" benefit concerts in Cresson.
I'll remember Steve as being an outgoing, friendly man who loved to talk. He was a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan, and he always liked to chat about blues albums he heard or performances he got to see. He recently got to meet and have pictures taken with Eric Johnson.
My final memory of Steve is one of the happiest. Back in October, I ran into Steve and Kim at the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival; we all had shown up to watch Norman Nardini's performance. As Norman and his band were performing, an elderly lady in a walker got up in front of the stage and began dancing in her walker. Steve began to cheer the lady on, yelling out "Go Granny! Go Granny!" He had me laughing hysterically.
As Kim said when she called and broke the news to me on Thursday, Steve is probably upstairs in the heavens, watching Stevie Ray Vaughan jam, and enjoying every minute of it.
Rest in peace, Steve, and thanks for the fun memories. And to Kim and the rest of the family, our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences here at Q94. Steve was a part of Q94's extended listener family who will be greatly missed.
Here is a picture I took of Steve and Kim back on August 28, 2005, during the "End Of Summer Jam" benefit concert in Cresson. It was a nice and relaxing late summer afternoon, and we were all kicking back, enjoying the bands onstage, and sharing some snacks and good times together.
