All this week, the prize up for grabs on the 4:15 PM "Classic Rock Clip" contest is a free full-service car wash coupon good at the Pleasant Valley Boulevard Altoona location of Johnny On the Spot Car Wash. Today's correct answer was "Pretending" by Eric Clapton.
This afternoon's 5:15 PM "Lost Classic" from the back of the rack was "What You're Doing" by Rush; we played the live version from the 1976 live set All The World's A Stage. We belatedly celebrated Rush singer and bassist Geddy Lee's 54th birthday on Sunday.
Well, the old saying goes that sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. Well, this past weekend, the bear got me. I drove 3-plus hours to the Schuylkill County Fair in hopes of seeing the Victory In Heaven Band (a group I play pretty frequently on the "Backyard Rocker," they've been guests on the show a few times). I was hoping to show up and surprise them, especially their leader, Sterling Koch, who is also one of my fellow writers with Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. On paper it looked like a good plan. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. I made it to the fair okay, arriving early enough to check out an earlier oldies/polka band called the Shoreliners, browse around the fair (one of the smaller fairs I've seen) and grab a bite to eat. I noted some dark clouds on the horizon, and hoped they wouldn't be a problem. They were. The clouds slowly moved towards the fairgrounds, and I started to hear some thunder. As the Victory In Heaven Band's scheduled first showtime of 7 PM approached, the storm was centered on the other side of the mountain adjacent to the fairgrounds, but was close enough that lightning was striking the hillside and producing some loud thunderclaps. The band delayed the start of their set out of safety concerns from the lightning. The storm turned out to be a very slow mover, and for most of the 7 PM hour the lightning and thunder continued close by, with very little rain. Then a light drizzle started by 8 PM, and a number of the fairgoers made their ways to the exits. After 8 PM, with the crowd thinning out and the drizzle becoming steadier, the decision was made to cancel the Victory In Heaven Band's performance (the storm was still fairly close). Drat! I went to the stage and greeted Sterling, who was surprised to see me showing up in his neighborhood to see him play. We both conceded that the weather was one thing you cannot control. After chatting a little bit, I headed to my car and began my trek back westward. Fortunately, I had sleepover arrangements near Harrisburg, so I didn't have to do the whole 3-hour roadtrip back home that night. Oh well, I still at least got to see the Schuylkill County Fair, plus drive through a few towns I've never been in before (such as Pottsville, the home of Yeungling Beer). My quest to witness V.I.H. will have to wait until another day...
