First, I thoroughly enjoyed the Gin Blossoms concert this past Sunday night at Blair County Ballpark. I thought the Blossoms themselves sounded good, and were friendly and cordial towards the crowd. (I hope to post pictures from the concert later this week.) And if you arrived early for the concert, how about the U.S. Sound Theatre!!! As I remarked to several people after witnessing the USST's set of classic brass-rock sounds, the Gin Blossoms had their work cut out for them to follow up that performance! Hats off to the U.S. Sound Theatre for a great performance; over 35 years after they first appeared on local stages, and for only playing out occasionally these days, these guys still know how to do it!
Coming back down to earth after that fun evening, we kicked off a brand new week on the 4:15 PM "Classic Rock Clip" contest. This week's prize is a copy of the CD reissue of Blue Oyster Cult's classic 1977 album Spectres, with previously unreleased tracks! Today's correct answer was "Roxanne" by the Police.
Today's 5:15 PM "Lost Classic" was one of my favorite ZZ Top deep cuts, "Manic Mechanic," from the group's 1979 album Deguello. Today is ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard's 58th birthday.
JP Garden Update: It's getting there, it's getting there! Over the past week I planted watermelons, cucumbers, cantelopes, spinach, salsify, green bush beans, lettuce, brussels sprouts, chili peppers, endive, kidney beans, more tomatoes, purple green peppers (I grew these last year and they did really well) and cherry hot peppers. Still to go: more tomatoes (8 more plants), sweet corn, popcorn, zucchini squash, winter squash, cabbage, herbs, pumpkins, lima beans, cauliflower and sunflowers. I'm actually reshaping the garden this year, narrowing it and extending it to make better use of sunlight and get some of it out of the shadow of my apple tree. This week I'll be digging the extension, with the goal of having all the remaining stuff planted by June 20.
