First, like many Steeler fans, I too am saddened by the passing of legendary longtime Steeler broadcaster Myron Cope at the age of 79. I always pictured Myron as Pittsburgh's version of Howard Cosell. Some people complained about Myron's screeching, nasal voice; but I always got a chuckle out of his color commentary, especially when either the game or his broadcasting partners got him wound up. I remember splitting my sides laughing at one caper when somebody in the broadcast booth left a sandwich sitting on his chair, and he stammered and went balistic about it. Another time, in Kansas City, when Chiefs fans started doing the Native American chant, Myron started mimicking them - classic! And of course, I'll always remember all the "Myron-isms" such as "Yoi," "Double-" and "Triple-Yoi," "Ocal-docal," "Hmmm-hahh!" anda whole lot more. I've missed hearing Myron after he left broadcasting in 2004, and I'll definitely miss him now. Rest in peace, Myron...Hmmm-Hahh!!!
We continued "pot-luck CD week" on the daily 4:10 PM "Classic Rock Clip" contest, today giving away a Jimi Hendrix CD to the lucky listener who eventually guessed "Behind Blue Eyes" by the Who. (And you had to love the guy who called and guessed "Smoke on the Water" by Black Sabbath - priceless!)
Today's 5:15 PM "Lost Classic" off the back of the rack was "That's the Way Love Ought to Be" by Pittsburgh's Donnie Iris, from his 1981 album King Cool. We got a head-start on Donnie's 65th birthday tomorrow. Yep, Donnie Iris turns 65! Anybody who saw Donnie perform at Altoona's Railroader's Memorial Museum will attest, Donnie still has the energy of somebody half that age, if not younger! And the voice, too!
And of course, I'm elated with the return of the doomsday drama Jericho on CBS. Have you seen this show since its return? Each of the three episodes so far has had me on the edge of my seat for the duration! The plot has definitely thickened, and what a wild ride! In the aftermath of the terrorist nuclear attack on America, which wiped out a number of cities and plunged the nation into chaos, we have learned that America has divided into two separate nations, with the Mississippi River serving as the dividing line. The western nation, with Cheyenne, Wyoming as its capitol, is the Allied States of America. The eastern nation is run by the remnants of the old federal government, and the capitol is in Columbus, Ohio. Tensions are rising between the two sides, with Texas - now independent - soon to decide which nation it will align with. We're learning that the Cheyenne government is apparently in complicity with the terrorist plot, and Jake and Hawkins are doing what they can to expose the Cheyenne government before Texas chooses to ally with them. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! After every portion of this week's show, I found myself repeating the phrase "THIS SHOW KICKS A**!!!" I can't wait til next week's episode!
