On Friday night, Sept. 21, as part of the second annual Roar In The Mountains motorcycle rally held in Altoona, The Underground Television and Q94 presented Jackyl, with special guests Wiskerbisket and Way Down East, at the Jaffa Shrine.
From Lewistown, Wiskerbisket opened the night with a rowdy set that mixed current and classic rock favorites. The group's new singer, Joel DePietro, was a wildman who rallied the audience into a dancing and grooving frenzy; he and bassist Milhouse even jumped down off the stage and ran through the audience.
Next was the McConnellsburg-based band Way Down East. These guys came on like gangbusters, proudly drilling their set of heavy, Southern- and country-informed rock. The group tracked through most of their brand new CD, Summon the Sea Hag, and also got the crowd cheering with their "Backyard Rocker" hit "Modern Day Outlaw." You've got to like a band that brings a portrait of Hank Williams Jr. on the stage with them! Way Down East had the crowd stomping and grooving, and they provided a perfect lead-in for the headliners.
Jackyl was wild, loud and rowdy! Singer Jesse James Dupree, on the eve of his 45th birthday, was kicking off the birthday celebration early...Armed with a bottle of Crown Royal and cans of Pabst to wash it down with, Jesse demonstrated his gift of gab, telling wild stories in between songs and rallying the crowd to get crazier as the performance progressed. Of course, Jackyl's music did a good job of firing people up, too, as the group did many of their favorites, such as "I Stand Alone," "When Will It Rain," "Push Comes to Shove," "Dirty Little Mind," "Redneck Punk," "Down On Me" (which became a singalong); and during the encore, their rendition of Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band," "She Loves My (chicken)" and - with Jesse brandishing his reliable Stihl chainsaw - "The Lumberjack!" (No Jaffa furnishings were damaged during the chainsaw solo in the middle of the song!) It was the hardest that the Jaffa Shrine has rocked since the 70's, and the crowd in attendance had an exhaustive, sweaty good time! Afterward, the Jackyl crew came out to the Jaffa's front lobby to sign autographs and greet fans.
Bottom line - WHAT A PARTY!
