Over $2,000 was raised for American Red Cross Disaster Services and Hurricane Katrina relief this past Thursday night during a benefit concert at City Limits in Altoona. The show featured a full evening of entertainment, with performances from Matt Burns, Travis Singer, Under One, the duos Dustin Burley & Rob Bonsell and Adam & Rory, Gin & Juice and In. Hats off to the organizers, Tabatha, Adam and Rory, as well as Claudio and the staff at City Limits, for a successful evening.
Another Hurricane Katrina benefit concert took place this past Sunday at the Parrot Bay Café in Johnstown, and featured performances from Who’s Your Daddy, John Charney & White Mojo, Split Image, Joe & Denise Tierpack, Jax, John Bagnato & Dave Distefano, V-Twin, Jeremy Kosmack and Itch. Proceeds from the benefit also went to American Red Cross Disaster Services.
A special memorial benefit concert and jam session will take place in the Bedford area next Saturday evening, Oct. 8, to remember a fallen area musician. The show will take place at the Bedford Elks, and starts at 6 PM. The show will remember well-known Bedford area musician thingy Smith, who died of cancer in July of 2003. The show will feature many musicians who performed with thingy in various bands, including thingy and the Countdowns and more. Food and refreshments will be available. Donation is $10, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society’s Bedford County Unit.
With their backs against the wall, organizers of the effort to save the historic Roxbury Bandshell in Johnstown from the wrecking ball received unexpected good news in late September, in the form of $20,000 donated by a Jennerstown man. Luke Speicher came through with the donation, which enabled organizers to legally hold off demolition of the historic bandshell and landmark while the court system further considers the matter. The City of Johnstown wants to demolish the large stone Roxbury Bandshell to make way for more parking space at Roxbury Park.
A change on the lead microphone for Johnstown-based modern rockers Shades Of June. The group and singer April Karlheim have parted ways; Jess Maguire takes over lead singing duties. Jess made her debut with Shades Of June this past weekend.
