An excellent time was had this past Sunday night at the Hitching Post in Altoona. It was one of those magical occasions when the stars and planets aligned correctly, and musical elements came together to produce a special night.
The ingredients: You had Felix & the Hurricanes, playing one of few public gigs in the midst of their ongoing state prison tour. You had former Hurricanes drummer John McKnight (in town for the holidays from his current home base in Atlanta; John was in Philadelphia the night before, jamming in The Renegades of Southern Rock with former Allman Brothers guitarist "Dangerous" Dan Toler, John Hall of Wet Willie, plus members of Marshall Tucker and Sanford-Townsend Band) - along with his father, Dewayne McKnight. You had harmonica ace Barney Sledge, back in town from Austin, Texas. You had guest musicians in the house such as Brian Cupples (Backdraft/.00 Buck), Dwane Edmiston (Wood-n-Strings), Red Solinski and Rick Ramsey (ex-Stix and Stones). And you had a packed house in the holiday spirit - result: PARTY!
I'll let the pictures tell the story. The jams were full and colorful, bright and upbeat. There was a lot of happiness and love in the room. Longtime Hurricanes fans were reminded of John McKnight and his wealth of talent; while a few newer fans saw this man's amazing talents for the first time.
As I said, a magical evening!
A percussion jam erupted during "Evil Ways," with Red Solinski on the conga and John McKnight behind the kit.
John McKnight goes to work behind the kit.
John McKnight, dazzling the house...
As the Hurricanes play "Neon Moon," lead Hurricane Felix Kos treats Hitching Post matriarch/chef Stephanie to a slow dance.
Jeff Clapper and Brian Cupples, making music and having fun.
Dewayne McKnight and Hurricanes drummer Bob Watters, keeping the beat.
Hurricane Felix and Dewayne McKnight.
Father and son: Dewayne and John McKnight.
John, Dewayne, Jeff and Brian.
Once again, Felix and Dewayne.
In the party's late stages, Rick Ramsey chimes in on harmonica while the dance floor is hopping.
