The 12th annual Millennium Music Conference will take place next weekend, Feb. 14-17, at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill near Harrisburg. The event will feature three days of informative seminars, panels, keynote addresses, mentoring, and a trade show; as well as four nights of showcase performances throughout the Harrisburg area from nearly 300 different bands and artists. Two representatives from the Altoona area will be showcasing at this year's Millennium; rockers Spirit Lost and country favorite Ricky Lee. Q94's "Backyard Rocker" will be representing at this year's Millennium, and even appearing on a radio panel next Sunday afternoon. We will recap the happenings at this year's conference two weeks from tonight, on our February 24 edition of the "Backyard Rocker."
Although Labor Day weekend is a long distance away, some preliminary entertainers have already been announced for this year's Johnstown Folkfest. Already on the bill to perform at this year's event, happening August 29-31 at Festival Park near downtown Johnstown, are Jason & the Scorchers, Deke Dickerson & the Ecco-Fonics, Barrence Whitfield, Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers, Rusty Gun Revival, The Marauders, Dubmissive and more. You can see the entire slate of performers by visiting the Folkfest website, www.jaha.org/folkfest.
Tyrone/Altoona-based melody punk rockers Lose The Name (formerly Signal Lost) have signed a recording deal with California-based record label Takeover Records, the label started by former Yellowcard guitarist Benjamin Harper. According to guitarist Jimmy Skinny, the group will soon release their new EP, Fells Point, through the label.
The Altoona area lost another live music venue this past week with the demolition of the Victory Lane Saloon building on Monday. The 110-year-old building had been red-tagged after bricks fell from the structure nearly a month earlier.
And we are sad to report the passing of a former Cambria County musician in late January. Tim Weatherford, who played drums in area bands before moving to Tennessee, passed away from an apparent heart attack on January 25. He was 33.
