In Local Music News…
State College's Lowjack will be going on the backburner indefinitely at the end of July; as the group's singer, guitarist and ringleader, Dennis Fallon, is leaving the State College area to head across the country and pursue other opportunities. Dennis and Lowjack will play out their remaining schedules of shows through July in various State College area venues.
The annual "Barnyard Bash," a day-long concert and dirt-bike riding event, will be taking place on Saturday, July 19 at Dirt Soldiers, located between Carrolltown and Loretto. This year's Bash will start at 12 noon, and feature performances from the bands Tombstone Radio, Black River Circus, The AvantGarde, The Scraps, Drain the Sorrow, thingy Shack Posse, Samara, Body Farm and Locked Inside.
We at the "Backyard Rocker" wish a speedy recovery to Quarterstick soundman Denny Coleman, who was seriously injured in a work-related accident on Thursday, and is currently admitted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
And local musician Jack Servello recently helped out a late 60's bubblegum pop group in recreating one of their hits. Mick Manseuto of the 1910 Fruitgum Co., who scored late 60's hits with "Simon Says" and "1-2-3 Red Light," contacted Jack a few months ago, informing him that K-Tel Records wanted the group to re-do their hit "Goody Goody Gumdrops" for an upcoming compilation album. The group did not have the time or resources to get into a recording studio, and Mick asked Jack if he could make them a track exactly like their original hit single. Jack took the song and made the group a karaoke track exactly like their original record; Jack played all the instruments, including electric guitars, lead guitar, piano, leslie organ, and vibes. His son Richie played the drum parts as they sounded on the record. After hearing Jack's completed work, Mick and group founder Frank Jeckell liked it, and entered a studio to add their vocals to Jack's instrumental track.
