This week on the 4:10 PM "Classic Rock Clip" contest, the prize is a set of four passes to ride the "Horseshoe Special" excursion train, travelling around the world famous Horseshoe Curve and back as part of this year's annual Railfest at the Railroaders Memorial Museum. The passes also include admission to Railfest, the Railroaders Museum and Horseshoe Curve. Today's correct answer was "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.
Today's 5:15 PM "Lost Classic" was "Momma's Little Jewel" by Mott the Hoople, from their 1972 album All the Young Dudes. The song featured David Bowie playing saxophone. On this date in 1971, a small riot broke out during a Mott the Hoople concert at Royal Albert Hall in London, which resulted in rock being temporarily banned from that venue.
Programming note: Since yours truly will be away on vacation this Friday, July 11, there will be no "Classic Rock Clip" or "Lost Classic" that day.
I hope your 4th of July holiday weekend went well! I know mine sure did! On Friday the 4th, thanks to my good friend Big Jim, I had the opportunity to ride on Pittsburgh's Gateway Clipper during their 4th of July Fireworks Cruise. The Cruise was actually a tour deal through Fullington Bus Tours, and we rode the bus out to Pittsburgh's Station Square, where we boarded the Gateway Clipper cruise boat "Empress." We rode along the Monongahela River, while enjoying a buffet dinner and a live band on the boat called Soulvillage. After the two-hour cruise, the boat stopped by the Fort Pitt Bridge, where we sat and watched Pittsburgh set off its fireworks from Point State Park. What a display! Definitely the 'Burgh knows how to set off a 4th of July fireworks display! Thanks again to Big Jim for hooking me up with this trip, it was a blast!
A few photos from the cruise and fireworks:
Night starts to arrive as the "Empress" is on the return leg of the cruise, and approaching downtown Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River as the lights are coming on.
The band performing on board the "Empress," Soulvillage. These guys and gal did a selection of soul, jazz, and pop favorites.
And then...the fireworks!
On Saturday, I roadtripped to the state's capitol, Harrisburg, for the annual American Musicfest, a three-day celebration of music and food that happens along the Susquehanna River. Musicfest features four different stages providing nonstop musical entertainment, from rock, blues, R&B, folk, ethnic music and more.
Then on Sunday, I relaxed by logging some quality fishing time at Prince Gallitzin State Park. My decision to go fishing was made when I checked on my garden earlier in the day, and found some Japanese beetles feasting on some of my vegetable leaves. I learned a few years ago that Japanese beetles make great bait for panfish, so I grabbed what beetles I could catch, and took them all fishing! Thanks in part to those beetles, I had a good day panfishing, and will be enjoying a fish fry in the very near future!
Speaking of the garden...JP GARDEN UPDATE...The garden is mostly all planted now, with the exception of some herb seeds, which will go in before week's end. Most everything seems to be growing well at this point, except for my peas, which a baby rabbit was able to crawl under my fence and decimate. The peas have since been replanted, and the fence has been reinforced to eliminate the breaches, so the varmint hopefully can't do any further damage. I'm getting close to harvesting turnips, and my tomatoes have their first blossoms.
