On this afternoon's 4:10 PM "Classic Rock Clip" contest, we gave away the last pair of tickets to see the Pittsburgh Pirates take on the Houston Astros Sept. 21 at PNC Park. The correct answer was "Ready for Love" by Bad Company.
The daily 5:15 PM "Lost Classic" was "I'll Be Running" by Molly Hatchet, from their 1978 self-titled album. Today is guitarist Dave Hlubek's 56th birthday.
And at 5 PM, we announced the winner of last night's Battle of the Bands at the Railroaders Museum. Flight 19 received the most votes over a field including Lies Inc., Spirit Lost, BluesMoon and Nitekast; and they win the opening slot for the Loverboy concert at the Museum Sept. 26. Last night was a great night for local music; good thing the rains held off!
Speaking of rain, I'm not complaining about the drencher we received today. My garden was almost dried out, it needed the rain. Which brings me to...
JP GARDEN UPDATE: Not much to update, as this year's garden hasn't done too well since my last report. I kept up on weeding, watering, thinning plants and keeping the rabbits at bay for the most part; but for whatever reason a lot of veggies grew slowly or went in the wrong direction. I did get a good harvest of zucchinis, onions, a few ears of sweet corn, a few cloves of garlic, a few turnips, and it appears I'll get a good harvest of kidney beans once they finish drying. But my tomatoes are slow this year; I've picked a handful or two of cherry tomatoes, and just picked my first good full-size tomato today! I've not harvested any green peppers yet, and my chili peppers have been slow thus far. My broccoli and cabbages are growing slowly; perhaps they'll be ready in the fall. My winter squash vines all died off, and my pumpkin vines are barely doing anything. But the surprise, a renegade group of what appears to be ornamental pumpkin vines that came up by themselves (the tiny pumpkins that decorate tables and autumn displays) is doing brisk business; I've harvested 15 of the things already, and more are on the vines...go figure! I still have hopes for other things coming along, such as carrots, beets, radishes, potatoes (I'll be digging those up next week), popcorn (just now growing tassles), lima beans, green beans and Northern beans. So it hasn't been a banner year for JP's Garden, but I'll take what I can get from it at this point! Some years are like that...
